Typically, the reason for bad breath in toddlers is they had foods that were interested that are smelly. They also may not be taking care of their teeth, and poor oral hygiene causes this. If they aren’t drinking enough water or producing saliva, they might have dry mouth, which isn’t’ fun. You may also have cavities and tartar buildup, which gives off a fouls odor from the bacteria that are there. Finally, you may have foreign objects in the mouth, and that can be a serious problem. Most of these can be treated at home but if you do notice, a few of these can pose serious problems to the oral health of a toddler.
If your child likes to have garlic and onions, which is a bit surprising, you may want to limit these foods in their mouth. Making sure that they do wash it away with water can help.
Mouth breathing or dry mouth is another problem. If they have a stuffy nose, try to get them some nasal spray to help, and get them to drink at least 3-4 glasses of water a day. If they have issues while sleeping, get them to take something before they go to bed.
Sometimes though, the issue might be due to infections, including sinus infections, tonsillitis, and allergies that can cause issues with this. You may also have a kid that suffers from acid reflux, and although that’s very rare in a toddler, it can happen. Also, if they aren’t taking care of their teeth, abscesses can form, and not only are they fatal, they can make your breath smell rancid.
So how do you treat this? Well, brushing twice a day can help a child keep their teeth clean. Get them one that helps with their teeth at the right age. You may also need to floss their teeth once a day too. They may not be able to do it on their own just yet, but with the right help, they’ll be able to take care of it.
Finally, see a dental professional. A family dentist can help with checkups of the teeth, and in turn, let them know about any issues you might be having. If they notice the bad breath is due to cavities or the like, they can get you a fitting treatment for this. You should always try to see a family dentist at least twice a year for a 6 month checkup, and if there are other issues, they can tackle them.
